The TLC2932 is designed for phase-locked loop (PLL) systems and consists of a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) and an edge-triggered phase discriminator (PFD). The oscillation frequency range of the VCO is set by an external bias resistor (RBIAS). The VCO has a 1/2 divider at the output stage.

Functional block diagram

High-speed PFDS with built-in charge pumps detect the phase difference between the reference frequency and the signal frequency of the external counter input. Both VCO and PFD have suppression functions and can be used as power down modes. The TLC2932 is suitable for use as a high performance phase-locked loop due to its high speed and stable oscillation capability

The frequency of VCO oscillation is determined by the external resistance (RBIAS) connected between the VCO VDD and the BIAS terminal. The frequency and range of oscillations depend on the value of this resistor. The bias resistance of the minimum temperature coefficient is nominally 3.3 kΩ, 3 v at the VCO VDD terminal, and nominally 2.2 kΩ, 5 v at the VCO VDD terminal. For details about the frequency locking range, see recommended operation conditions. The figure below shows the typical frequency variation and VCO control voltage.
