To overcome design challenges that have plagued engineers for decades, Texas Instruments (TI) has announced a revolutionary "calculation through power consumption (CTPL)" technology, available in its MSP430 FRAM microcontroller (MCU) series (including new MSP430FR6972 MCU) for context preservation and restoration, the company said.
The patent-pending technology can realize instant wake-up through intelligent system state recovery after the application is unexpectedly powered off. In addition, the new MSP430FR6972 MCU using TI CTPL technology includes integrated intelligent analog and digital peripherals to reduce system cost, power consumption and size. These features include a low-power LCD controller, a 12-bit differential analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with an internal window comparator, and a 256-bit AES accelerator.
The ultra-low power MSP430FR6972 MCU with 64 KB of non-volatile FRAM highlights TI ’s leading ULPBench score for 16-bit MCUs and can be used for data logging to enable applications such as radio condition monitors. The system was designed and developed as TI in Kilby Labs, TI's innovation research center. It is paired with TI's bq25570 energy harvesting IC and SimpleLink multi-standard CC2650 wireless MCU. It can work with button batteries for decades. The system monitors and analyzes the vibration frequency of the motor and enables the operator to accurately predict and schedule maintenance, thereby reducing the possibility of machine failure.
Non-volatile FRAM-based MCU's ultra-low power consumption features: 1-Reduce manufacturing costs by reducing programming time on the assembly line. 2-Unified FRAM allows flexible use of memory across data and application code-this is a very flexible solution that can be updated in the field. 3-Unparalleled write speed, compared to traditional non-volatile storage solutions, the durability of the write cycle is increased by 10 billion times-very suitable for data recording applications. 4-Code development is further simplified because it does not require pre-erasing of segments and can be accessed at the bit level, enabling real-time data recording with zero extra power.
MSP430FR6972 FRAM MCU features and advantages: 1-The integrated 116-segment LCD driver includes software-configurable LCD pins for fast and easy hardware layout; the integrated charge pump can be maintained even when the MCU is in low-power mode LCD contrast. 2-Additional integration includes 52 GPIOs with capacitive touch enabled, five timers, comparators, real-time clock (RTC) counters, and SPI, UART, and I2C communications to reduce system cost and product size. 3-The inherent advantages of non-volatile FRAM, LCD controllers and built-in security features make the MSP430FR6972 MCU ideal for smart flow and power metering co-processing, building and factory automation, and blood glucose meter applications. 4-The RTC standby current consumption is 700nA, and the ULPBench score is 117. The MSP430FR6972 MCU was demonstrated on the 5th, which is the industry's lowest power consumption 16-bit MCU with LCD. 5-TI's EnergyTrace ++ technology enables developers to analyze power consumption in real time and includes unique features that provide system and peripheral status information. This allows engineers to control their power budgets and optimize software to create the lowest energy-consuming applications. 6-Detailed migration guides and application notes simplify the migration from existing flash MCUs to MSP430 FRAM MCUs and simplify portability in the code-compatible MSP430 FRAM series. MSP430FR6972 MCU and its variants have been mass produced. The MSP-EXP430FR6989 LaunchPad allows developers to start using a full-featured board for evaluation. The company stated that the MSP-TS430PM64F target socket development board and MSP-FET programmer / debugger can be used for full development.
