The bq40z50-R1 battery pack manager / fuel gauge is a new product from Texas Instruments that combines patented Impedance Track technology. Fully integrated, single-chip, battery pack-based solutions provide a variety of gas metering, protection and certification functions for 1-series, 2-series, 3-series and 4-series lithium-ion batteries and lithium-polymer batteries. The bq40z50-R1 device uses its integrated high-performance analog peripherals to measure and maintain and accurately record the available capacity, voltage, current, temperature, and other key parameters in a lithium-ion or lithium polymer battery, and reports this information to the SMBus System host controller with v1.1 compatible interface. The bq40z50-R1 device supports the TURBO BOOST mode by providing the maximum power and current available to the host system. The device also supports a battery trip point and sends a BTP interrupt signal to the host system at a preset charge threshold state. The bq40z50-R1 provides software-based first and second-level safety protection against overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, short-circuit current, overload and overheating conditions, and other conditions related to battery pack and battery failure. SHA-1 authentication and secure storage for authentication keys can be used to identify original battery packs. The company said that the compact 32-lead QFN package minimizes the cost and size of smart battery solutions while providing maximum functionality and safety for battery metering applications.
