Renesas Electronics Corporation announced that its 32-bit RX65N MCU has passed the CMVP Level 3 certification under the NIST FIPS 140-2 security standard. The device is said to be the world's first general-purpose MCU to obtain Level 3 certification.

The use of certified MCUs will make it easier for customers to produce devices with powerful and trustworthy safety features, which will increase development workload and reduce overall safety risks.

Sakae Ito, Vice President of Renesas’ IoT Platform Business Unit, said: “As more and more IoT devices gain network connectivity, the risks of malicious threats such as data leakage, data tampering, and deception are increasing, making security more secure than ever. Time is more important." "The CMVP level 3 certification of RX MCU means that customers can build strong security in their products without a dedicated security chip, and I am glad that this will help accelerate the development of secure IoT devices."

32-bit devices are general-purpose MCUs with security, connectivity, and HMI functions, which are very suitable for applications including industrial and IoT devices. The device includes a TSIP module that has passed CAVP certification. TSIP includes encryption engines supporting AES, RSA, SHA, and ECC, TRNG, and encryption key management mechanisms, which implement powerful security functions. The device provides a dual-bank flash memory that supports background operations and SWAP functions to facilitate safe and highly reliable firmware updates in system control or network devices and prevent program tampering.

Since this device has passed CMVP Level 3 certification, other RX series MCUs with the same TSIP, RX651, RX66N, RX72N and RX72M can run equivalent safety functions.
