Chinese company Extant Future (Beijing) Information Technology Co., Ltd. (Extant Future) has launched a detector that monitors fetal heart rate and dynamics during the last trimester of pregnancy. The "Modoo Modoo" patch product is applied to the skin of a pregnant woman's abdomen and uses passive sonar technology to record the heart rate of the fetus, rather than using traditional ultrasound Doppler methods.

Powered by Nordic's nRF52833 Bluetooth® LE SoC, the Mojo Modoo patch uses audio sensors to detect any vibrations on the wearer's skin. Then, amplify the signal and filter the data using the powerful 64 MHz, 32-bit Arm® Cortex® M4 processor with a floating-point unit (FPU) inside this SoC device. It filters data using algorithms that reduce background noise and track changes over time.

The monitoring patch then uses Bluetooth low energy to transmit the data results to the user's smartphone, where it analyzes fetal movement and heart rate curves against years of reference data to help identify any signs of intrauterine distress, such as hypoxia. Users can also securely send the data to the wearer's doctor for more analysis.

Ma Jiliang, founder and CEO of Handed Down Future, said: "In the third trimester, expectant mothers often need to record fetal movements for up to three hours a day. Recording at home or at work is time-consuming and inconvenient."“Modoo Modoo products are designed to provide home users with a convenient, portable alternative to fetal movement recording. Users simply attach the device to their stomach with a belly strap, pair it with a smartphone, spend 20 minutes testing, and then submit a report for evaluation. "

Ma Jiliang said: "Because of the frequent reporting of fetal heart rate, it is necessary to prolong the battery life. At the same time, the product also needs to have a lightweight design for easy use by pregnant women. Therefore, Momo Modoo uses a custom 105 mAh lithium-ion rechargeable battery, Weighing only 3.5 grams. We expect this product to run for at least a week on a charge (monitoring 20 minutes a day). And we opted for a switchless button design, which requires a system with very good static power consumption.”

"Thanks to the nRF52833 SoC's ultra-low power consumption and fully automatic power management system, we were actually able to exceed this goal with up to 20 monitoring and logging sessions on a single charge."Ma Jiliang continued: "Another advantage we have in choosing the Nordic solution is that the Nordic SDK provides a wealth of routines, which brings an excellent reference design to the development process, which greatly shortens the development cycle and improves the system's performance. stability."
