Nordic Semiconductor is making strides into the Wi-Fi® wireless IoT market with the highly anticipated nRF7002 ultra-low power dual-band Wi-Fi 6 synergy IC. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Cellular IoT are the three most popular wireless IoT technologies in the world, but Nordic Semiconductor is one of the few companies in the world that offer them all.
The nRF7002 can be used with Nordic's existing products to provide seamless Wi-Fi connectivity and Wi-Fi based positioning (SSID sniffing of local Wi-Fi hubs). Existing products that the nRF7002 can mate with include the nRF52® and nRF53® series of Bluetooth SoCs, and the nRF91® series of cellular IoT SiPs. The nRF7002 can also be used with non-Nordic host devices.
Nordic acquired Imagination Technologies Group's Wi-Fi development team, core Wi-Fi expertise and Wi-Fi IP technology assets in 2020, followed by the introduction of the Wi-Fi chip nRF7002. With the nRF7002, Nordic Semiconductor leverages decades of legendary ultra-low power wireless IoT technology and silicon design expertise in Wi-Fi 6. The Wi-Fi 6 standard improves efficiency to support ultra-long-life battery-powered wireless IoT operations. Wi-Fi has been incorporated into the Smart Home Matter protocol championed by Apple, Amazon, Google, Samsung and hundreds of other consumer IoT companies.
