The TPS764xx series of low voltage step-down (LDO) regulators offer the advantages of low noise, low voltage drop, low power operation and miniaturized package. A logically-enabled sleep mode to turn off the regulator reduces the static current to a maximum of 1µa at TJ = 25°C. Fixed voltages of 2.5v, 2.7v, 2.8v, 3.0v and 3.3v are also provided.

The combination of new circuit designs and process innovations allowed the usual PNP-pass transistor to be replaced by a PMOS pass component. Since the PMOS channel element behaves as a low-value resistance, the step-down is very low -- typically 300 mV at 150 mA load current (TPS76433) -- and is proportional to the load current. Since the PMOS channel element is a voltage-driven device, the static current is very low (140 μa Max) and stable over the entire output load current range (0 mA to 150 mA).

Used in portable systems such as laptops and mobile phones, the low voltage drop characteristics and low power operation result in a significant increase in the operating life of the system battery. In addition, they have low static current compared to traditional LDO regulators. The TPS764xx family of devices is packaged in a 5-terminal small-contour integrated circuit SOT-23 package, ideal for low-noise applications, cost-sensitive designs, and applications where board space is critical.
