Intersil has announced two new PMBus-compatible single-phase digital hybrid DC-DC controllers that provide point-of-load (POL) conversion for FPGAs, DSPs, ASICs, processors, and general-purpose system rails.
The ISL68200 with integrated MOSFET driver and ISL68201 with PWM output simplify power supply design for data center routers, servers and storage, and wireless infrastructure equipment. The ISL68200 can directly drive external MOSFETs, while the ISL68201 is paired with Intersil's DrMOS (Integrated Driver and MOSFET) power stage to create a complete voltage regulator solution.
The ISL68200 and ISL68201 digital hybrid controllers have the advantages of a digital PMBus interface and provide the performance of Intersil's R4 ™ control loop. Both controllers are fully configurable via external pin assignment resistors, providing a familiar engineering flow and eliminating the need for non-volatile memory. Designers can use the PMBus interface and Intersil's PowerNavigator GUI software to read back Vin, Vout, Iout, and temperature telemetry data, monitor fault reporting bits, and change Vout setpoints in real time. For systems that do not require PMBus functionality, this interface can be used to debug power during on-board power and then remain disconnected during final production. This feature allows designers to quickly modify important parameters such as switching frequency,
The ISL68200 and ISL68201 utilize Intersil's proprietary R4 modulation technology, which provides an uncompensated control loop, eliminating external compensation resistors and capacitors. The R4 modulator has an energy-saving, light-load efficiency operating mode and industry-leading transient performance. It can adjust the duty cycle and switching frequency based on load transients. Compared to competing technologies, the fast response time of the R4 control loop significantly reduces the required output capacitance. Together with the small 4mm x 4mm package of the ISL68200 / 01, the total solution size is smaller compared to competing products.
Mark Downing, senior vice president of infrastructure and industrial power, said: "We are seeing a growing demand for DC-DC controllers with digital interfaces that allow customers to monitor the health of the power supply, output current / voltage and change output voltage in real time .Product, Intersil. "The ISL68200 and ISL68201 digital hybrid controllers offer higher POL performance than competing analog controllers, while providing familiar design flows and PMBus capabilities in high-end all-digital products. "
The ISL68200 with integrated MOSFET driver is now available in a 4mm x 4mm, 24-lead QFN package. As support, the company provided the ISL68200DEMO1Z evaluation board.
The ISL68201 with PWM output is paired with the ISL99140 DrMOS power stage and is now available in a 4mm x 4mm, 24-lead QFN package. Supported is the ISL68201-99140DEMO1Z evaluation board.
PowerNavigator GUI simplifies power supply design – Intersil's PowerNavigator tool simplifies power supply setup and configuration, including all device parameters and telemetry. The company says that the complete schematic design can be completed in minutes, and the GUI makes it easy to change features and functionality without changing any code.
